Is this hat wider than it is tall?

Yes it is.
The distance from the brim to the top is actually shorter than the distance from edge to edge of the brim.
Explanation
Hard to believe, isn't it? We aren't used to correctly gauging the height vs. the width of something like a hat. To make it harder, in this optical illusion, the angle at which we see the brim makes it look narrow and therefore smaller.
