Explanation

We use visual clues all the time to interpret what we see. We are used to seeing things as straight up and down. In this optical illusion, we try to adjust the black blocks to be directly on top of each other. In order to try to see them as straight up and down, we adjust the position of the horizontal lines, making them look unparallel.
