Explanation

This is one of a class of Müller-Lyer optical illusions that has been studied greatly. In general the arrows between the blue dot on the left and green dot in the middle break up the space making them seem closer than the green dot in the middle and the purple dot on the right. HOWEVER, in this optical illusion, they are actually farther apart.
